Yaren is the de facto capital of Nauru, the world's third-smallest country. Entering Nauru is a unique experience due to its remote location in the Central Pacific. All visitors must possess a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond their intended stay, a confirmed onward or return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds for their visit. The immigration process is straightforward but thorough, given the island's limited infrastructure and resources. Travelers should be prepared for a simple but meticulous check of documents upon arrival at Nauru International Airport (INU). Nauru's entry requirements are strictly enforced. Immigration officials will verify your visa status, accommodation details, and travel itinerary. It is important to have all documents organized and readily accessible. The country has limited tourist facilities, so pre-booking accommodation is mandatory and will be checked. Visitors should also note that Nauru uses the Australian Dollar (AUD) as its currency. Before traveling, visitors should be aware that Nauru has a very small tourism sector. Services are basic, and independent travel can be challenging. Most visitors require a sponsor (often a hotel or tour operator) who will help the visa process. Always confirm your entry eligibility well in advance of travel, as processing times can be longer than for more frequented destinations.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

All foreign nationals, except citizens of Taiwan, require a visa to enter Nauru. Visas are not issued on arrival. Applications must be submitted in advance through a sponsor in Nauru, typically a hotel, tour operator, or business contact.

Visa-Free Entry
Not applicable for most travelers.

Only citizens of Taiwan can enter Nauru without a visa, due to diplomatic relations.

Taiwanese passport holders should still confirm current entry conditions directly before travel.

Visa Required
Typically up to 30 days for tourist visas, extendable in-country.

Virtually all travelers, including citizens of major Western nations, require a visa obtained prior to travel.

How to Apply: 1. Secure a sponsor in Nauru (e.g., hotel booking). 2. The sponsor submits the visa application to the Nauru Department of Justice & Border Control on your behalf. 3. Once approved, a 'Visa Approval Notice' is issued. 4. You must present this notice to airline staff and immigration upon arrival. Processing can take several weeks.

The visa is technically issued upon arrival, but the pre-approval notice is mandatory for boarding and entry. Without it, you will be denied boarding. Your sponsor is responsible for your stay.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Nauru International Airport, you will go through immigration and customs. The process is generally efficient but formal. Have all your documents prepared.

1
Document Check
Present your passport, Visa Approval Notice, and completed incoming passenger card to the immigration officer.
2
Immigration Interview
The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, your sponsor, accommodation, and duration of stay.
3
Passport Stamp
If all is in order, you will receive an entry stamp in your passport specifying your allowed stay.
4
Baggage Claim & Customs
Collect your luggage and proceed through the customs inspection. Declare any items as required.

Important Contacts

Essential resources for your trip.

Embassy/Consulate

Immigration Authority
Nauru Department of Justice & Border Control
For official visa and immigration information. Contact is typically through your in-country sponsor.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) is strongly advised, though not an official Nauru requirement. It may be requested by airlines or immigration.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets is highly restricted and requires an import permit from the Nauru Department of Commerce, Industry & Environment. Animals are subject to a quarantine period. The process is complex and must be initiated months in advance.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas can often be extended. Applications for extension must be made through your sponsor to the Department of Justice & Border Control before your initial visa expires. Overstaying is a serious offense and can result in fines and deportation.
