Yaren Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and your nearest Nauru diplomatic mission before traveling, as requirements can change.
Yaren, the de facto capital of Nauru, serves as the main entry point for visitors to this small Pacific island nation. As one of the world's smallest countries, Nauru maintains relatively straightforward entry requirements for most travelers. The country's only international airport, Nauru International Airport, is located in the Yaren District and handles all international arrivals. Immigration procedures are generally efficient, though the limited frequency of international flights means that immigration officers process all passengers from each arriving flight. Most visitors to Nauru can obtain a visa on arrival, though it's highly recommended to arrange sponsorship or notify authorities in advance due to the country's remote location and limited tourist infrastructure. The immigration process is relatively informal compared to larger nations, but travelers should ensure they have all required documentation, including proof of onward travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation arrangements. Given Nauru's isolation and limited services, advance planning is essential for a smooth entry experience. Visitors should be aware that Nauru has limited banking facilities, medical services, and tourist amenities. It's crucial to arrange accommodation and local contacts before arrival, as there are very few hotels and tourism is not a major industry. Most visitors to Nauru are on business related to phosphate mining, government affairs, or refugee processing center operations. The country uses the Australian dollar as its currency, and travelers should bring sufficient cash as ATM availability is extremely limited.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Nauru operates a visa-on-arrival system for most nationalities, though advance notification and sponsorship are strongly recommended. Given the country's small size and limited tourism infrastructure, all visitors should make arrangements before traveling.

Visa on Arrival
Initial visa typically valid for 30 days

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Nauru International Airport

Includes
Australia New Zealand United States United Kingdom Canada European Union member states Japan South Korea Singapore Most Commonwealth countries

While visa on arrival is available, it is strongly recommended to contact the Nauru government or arrange sponsorship through a local contact, hotel, or business before traveling. Proof of onward travel, accommodation arrangements, and sufficient funds are required. Sponsorship letters can significantly expedite the process.

Advance Visa Application Required
Varies, typically 30 days initially

Some nationalities must obtain visa approval before traveling

How to Apply: Applications should be submitted to the nearest Nauru diplomatic mission or through the Nauru Department of Immigration. Processing can take 2-4 weeks. Most applicants will need a sponsor in Nauru.

This applies to countries without diplomatic relations with Nauru or those on restricted lists. Contact the Nauru Department of Immigration well in advance of travel. Given limited diplomatic representation, applications may need to be processed through Nauru's missions in Australia or other regional offices.

Visa Extension
Can be extended in 30-day increments, up to 90 days total typically

Extensions available for those wishing to stay longer

How to Apply: Apply at the Nauru Department of Immigration in Yaren before your current visa expires. Requires valid reason for extension and proof of sufficient funds.

Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration authorities. Business visitors and those with local sponsors generally have easier extension processes.

Arrival Process

The entry process at Nauru International Airport is relatively straightforward but can be slower than at larger airports due to limited staff. All passengers from each arriving flight are processed together, so expect to wait while everyone on your flight clears immigration.

1
Arrival at Nauru International Airport
After disembarking, proceed to the immigration hall. The airport is small with only one terminal, so follow other passengers. There may be limited signage in English and Nauruan.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, completed arrival card (distributed on the flight), and any sponsorship letters or supporting documents. Immigration officers will review your travel purpose, accommodation arrangements, and onward travel plans. Be prepared to show your return ticket.
3
Visa Processing
If obtaining a visa on arrival, the immigration officer will process your visa application. This may involve payment (cash in Australian dollars preferred) and additional questions about your stay. Processing time varies depending on the number of passengers.
4
Customs Declaration
Collect your luggage from the baggage claim area and proceed to customs. Declare any restricted items, large amounts of currency, or goods exceeding duty-free allowances on your customs declaration form.
5
Exit to Arrivals
After clearing customs, exit to the arrivals area where you can meet your host, hotel representative, or arrange transportation. There are limited taxis and no public transportation system, so pre-arranged pickup is strongly recommended.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Nauru. Ensure you have blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof of confirmed departure from Nauru is mandatory. Given limited flight schedules (typically only 1-2 flights per week), ensure your booking is confirmed.
Proof of Accommodation
Hotel confirmation, invitation letter from host, or business letter confirming your accommodation arrangements. This is strictly enforced due to limited accommodation options.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Bank statements, cash, or credit cards demonstrating ability to support yourself during your stay. Recommended minimum of AUD $100 per day.
Sponsorship Letter (Recommended)
Letter from a Nauruan resident, business, or hotel confirming they will sponsor your visit. While not always mandatory, this significantly facilitates entry and visa processing.
Completed Arrival Card
Immigration and customs forms distributed on the flight. Complete accurately with your accommodation address in Nauru.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Arrange accommodation and local contacts well before traveling. The limited number of hotels (primarily Menen Hotel and Od-N-Aiwo Hotel) fill up quickly, especially when government delegations or business groups visit.
Bring sufficient Australian dollars in cash. ATMs are unreliable and credit card acceptance is limited. The airport does not have currency exchange facilities.
Be patient during processing. With limited staff and infrequent flights, immigration procedures may take longer than expected. Maintain a polite and cooperative attitude.
Have printed copies of all documents. Internet connectivity is limited and unreliable, so don't rely on showing documents on your phone.
Check flight schedules carefully. Nauru Airlines (the only carrier serving the island) operates limited flights, and schedules can change. Confirm your flight 48-72 hours before departure.
Consider obtaining a sponsorship letter from your hotel or business contact before arrival. This can significantly speed up the visa-on-arrival process.
Dress modestly and professionally. While Nauru is casual, presenting yourself well at immigration creates a positive impression.

Customs & Duty-Free

Nauru's customs procedures are relatively straightforward but strictly enforced. The country has limited retail options, so many residents import goods, but visitors should be aware of restrictions and allowances. All items must be declared on your customs declaration form.

Alcohol
2 liters of spirits or wine, or 4.5 liters of beer
Must be 21 years or older. Alcohol imports are monitored due to local regulations. Excessive amounts may be questioned or confiscated.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco
Must be 18 years or older. Tobacco products are subject to import duties if exceeding these amounts.
Currency
Amounts over AUD $10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared
Both incoming and outgoing currency must be declared if exceeding this threshold. There are no restrictions on amounts, but declaration is mandatory for anti-money laundering purposes.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and gifts up to AUD $400 in value
Items clearly for personal use during your stay are generally exempt. Commercial quantities of any goods require special permits and are subject to duties.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics - strictly prohibited with severe penalties including imprisonment
  • Weapons and firearms - prohibited without special authorization from Nauru Police Force
  • Pornographic materials - prohibited under Nauruan law
  • Counterfeit goods - including fake currency, pirated media, and trademark violations
  • Endangered species products - items made from protected wildlife under CITES regulations
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables - to prevent introduction of pests and diseases
  • Meat and dairy products - strict biosecurity measures apply
  • Plants and seeds - require phytosanitary certificates and prior approval

Restricted Items

  • Prescription medications - must be accompanied by prescription and limited to personal use quantities. Carry medications in original packaging with doctor's letter
  • Drones and aerial photography equipment - require prior permission from Nauru government due to security concerns around refugee processing facilities
  • Professional camera/video equipment - may require media permits if for commercial or journalistic purposes
  • Radio communication equipment - requires approval from telecommunications authority
  • Marine products and shells - collection and export restrictions apply to protect marine environment

Health Requirements

Nauru has basic health requirements for entry, though medical facilities on the island are limited. Travelers should ensure they are adequately prepared for health emergencies as evacuation to Australia may be necessary for serious conditions.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate - required if arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries (certificate must be dated at least 10 days before arrival)

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations - ensure up to date with MMR, DPT, polio, and seasonal influenza
  • Hepatitis A - recommended for all travelers
  • Hepatitis B - recommended for those who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
  • Typhoid - recommended, especially if staying with local families or eating outside hotels
  • COVID-19 - check current requirements as these change frequently

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Nauru has one small hospital (Republic of Nauru Hospital) with limited capabilities. Serious medical conditions require evacuation to Australia or other regional centers, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Ensure your insurance covers emergency evacuation, as this is the most likely major expense. Bring sufficient supplies of any prescription medications as pharmacies have limited stock.

Current Health Requirements: Check current COVID-19 and other health requirements before traveling. Requirements may include pre-departure testing, vaccination certificates, or quarantine measures. Visit the Nauru government website or contact your nearest Nauru diplomatic mission for the latest health entry requirements. Health screening may be conducted at the airport upon arrival, including temperature checks.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport. If traveling with only one parent or with non-parents, carry notarized consent letters from absent parent(s) or legal guardians. Birth certificates showing parental relationship should be carried. Minors receive the same visa as accompanying adults. Note that Nauru has very limited child-friendly facilities and activities.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Nauru is extremely difficult and generally not recommended for short-term visitors. Requirements include: import permit from Nauru Department of Agriculture, current rabies vaccination (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), health certificate from licensed veterinarian issued within 10 days of travel, microchip identification, and treatment for parasites. Quarantine may be required. Given limited veterinary services in Nauru, pet travel is strongly discouraged unless relocating permanently.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas can typically be extended for up to 90 days total. For stays longer than 90 days, you'll need to apply for a different visa category such as business visa, work permit, or residence permit. Work permits require sponsorship from a Nauruan employer and approval from the Department of Immigration and Labor. Long-term residence requires significant justification and government approval. Business visitors on extended projects should arrange proper documentation before arrival. All extensions and permit applications are processed at the Department of Immigration in Yaren.

Business Travelers

Business visitors should obtain a business visa or letter of invitation from their Nauruan business partners. Carry documentation proving business purpose including company letters, meeting schedules, and contact details of local business associates. Business visas may allow longer stays and multiple entries. If conducting any work, ensure proper work authorization is obtained; business visa does not automatically permit employment.

Journalists and Media

Journalists, photographers, and film crews must obtain special media permits before arrival. Contact the Nauru government's media liaison office well in advance (several weeks minimum). Unauthorized journalism or photography of sensitive locations (including refugee processing facilities) is prohibited and can result in deportation. Media equipment may be inspected at customs.

Special Dietary or Medical Needs

Nauru has very limited food variety and medical supplies. If you have special dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, allergies, religious restrictions), bring supplementary food items as options are extremely limited outside the few hotels. For medical needs, bring comprehensive supplies of all medications and medical equipment you might need, as pharmacies have minimal stock and no specialist medical supplies.
